EU takes over Northern Co-Presidency of Union for the Mediterranean

From tomorrow, March 1, the European Union will take over from France the Northern Co-Presidency of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), following a decision on Monday by European foreign ministers meeting in Brussels.

According to the Conclusions adopted by the Foreign Affairs Council, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton, will take over the co-presidency for meetings of Foreign Ministers.

The European Commission will take over for Ministerial Meetings that solely concern matters falling within areas of exclusive EU competence. For other Ministerial Meetings, the Commission will also do so, in cooperation with the Member State holding the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU, except where such meetings solely concern matters falling within actions and responsibilities of the Member States, when the chair will be held by the rotating presidency.

The EU External Action Service will take over the UfM’s Northern Co-Presidency for Senior Official Meetings. (ENPI Info Centre)
