Euro-Mediterranean cooperation in research and innovation – why it matters

Why is cooperation in research and innovation with the Mediterranean region important to the European Union? Why is there a need for a renewed partnership in the field? How is cooperation organised? These are just some of the questions answered in a fact sheet released by the European Commission ahead of the Euro-Mediterranean Conference for Research and Innovation to be held in Barcelona next week.

The FAQ explains the background and policy framework, as well as the funding mechanisms open to Mediterranean partners and some of the achievements of past cooperation, with concrete examples of successful projects.

The 'Euro-Mediterranean Conference for Research and Innovation: An agenda for a renewed partnership' is organised by the European Commission, Directorate General for Research and Innovation, in Barcelona next week, on 2 and 3 April 2012. The conference aims to set out a path for Euro-Mediterranean Cooperation in Research and Innovation, based on closer cooperation on research and innovation policy.

Ahead of the conference, the European Commission has also published a brochure showcasing a selection of success stories from EU-funded science and technology projects, as well as a comprehensive directory of all the projects involving at least one partner from the Mediterranean Partner Countries supported under the EU's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7).

The ENPI Info Centre has also prepared a press pack outlining ongoing cooperation in the field between the European Union and its Mediterranean partner countries. The press pack looks at research and innovation as a key axis of cooperation, with particular attention on the EU's 7th Research Framework Programme (FP7), as well as the opportunities available for Mediterranean partners at a regional, bilateral, and individual research level.
