Syria holds photo exhibition to celebrate World Environment Day

10-06-2010

Under the theme “Many Species. One Planet. One Future”, the EU Delegation to Syria, the Syrian Ministry of State for Environment Affairs and the United Nations and the European Union are celebrating World Environment Day, with an open air photo exhibition highlighting Syria's protected areas.

A Delegation press release said the exhibition, showing beautiful photographs and descriptions of the landscapes, as well as endangered plants and animals, aims to increase awareness of the importance of environmental protection and to introduce Syria's protected areas to its citizens.

The exhibition is touring Damascus: it began at the Duma Arabic Cultural Centre, Rural Damascus on 5 June, is at the Environmental Garden near Damascus Citadel between 7-12 June and will be at Al-Sebki Park from 13 to 19.

World Environment Day (WED) was established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. Commemorated yearly on 5 June, WED is one of the principal vehicles to stimulate worldwide awareness of the environment and enhance political attention and action on environmental issues.

The theme of WED 2010 is “Many Species. One Planet. One Future”. It echoes the urgent call to conserve the diversity of life on our planet. A world without biodiversity is a very bleak prospect. Millions of people and millions of species all share the same planet, and only together can we enjoy a safer and more prosperous future. (ENPI Info Centre)
