EU endeavours to protect freedom of association in the Gaza Strip

09-07-2010

A civil network to protect the right of freedom of association in the Gaza Strip is to be established as part of an EU-funded project that aims to implement respect, protection, and promotion of the rights of freedom of association in the territory.

A press release said the network, to be created and managed by the Al Dameer Association for Human Rights and PNGO Network, includes ten civil and human rights organizations (Gaza Community Mental Health Program, Democracy and Workers' Rights Center, Al Mezan Center for Human Rights Red Crescent Society, Culture and Free Thought Association, Jabalia Society For Rehabilitation of Disabled, Palestinian Medical Relief Society, and Health Work Committees).

During their meeting, attended by the Director of EU's office in Gaza, network members signed a memorandum of understanding on the network mandate that aims to maintain and protect the right to form associations as a national, legal and democratic right. This objective will be achieved by taking all the steps to develop the right policies, raise awareness, lobby and influence decision-making. Raising public awareness is also considered.

The establishing associations and organizations of the network are convinced of the importance of having a coordination body that can coordinate and exchange experiences and information, finding integrity mechanisms between the various associations and coordinating their attitudes on the right to form associations in a free way.
