The European Commission has allocated an extra 110 million dirhams (around €9.95 million) to the support programme for the implementation of Morocco’s literacy strategy. The extra funding was announced on the occasion of international literacy day.
"Morocco has made great progress in recent years in the fight against illiteracy, but efforts must be maintained; and it is to consolidate the momentum towards greater modernization and progress that the EU has decided to increase its initial contribution to the literacy strategy programme by 110 million Moroccan dirhams to 297 million (almost €27 million) for the period 2008-2013,” said Eneko Landaburu, Head of the EU Delegation to Morocco.
A press release said this additional grant was aimed at supporting the extension of the actions undertaken, particularly for women, and strengthening efforts to ensure learning opportunities and sustainable socio-professional integration, especially for young adults.
The education sector has in recent years become the sector, together with health, that has benefited most from the EU’s support and investment in Morocco. The EU currently funds education programmes in Morocco for an amount close to 1.6 billion dirham of which 1 billion through the Education Sector Programme, 165 million through the Neighbourhood Investment Facility, which supports the implementation of emergency programmes, Literacy programme, and all projects under TEMPUS and ERASMUS MUNDUS that promote academic cooperation between the EU and Morocco.
