Award ceremony for gender equality drawing competition to be held in Damascus

The EU Delegation to Syria is inviting representatives of international and national press to the ceremony for the award of the EU-run International Drawing Competition on Gender Equality, won by two ten-year olds, Syrian Mohammad Izzo and Algerian Lila Gazaili.
 
A press release said the Ceremony, organised under the patronage of the Minister of Education, H.E. Dr. Ali Saad, the Head of the European Union Delegation to Syria, Ambassador Vassilis Bontosoglou, would take place on Saturday, 16 October at 11am in Maktab Anbar, Damascus Old City. Drawings made by 36 children from 8 schools in Damascus will also be presented in an exhibition.
 
The winners were competing with 50,000 children from 61 countries participating in the International Drawing Competition on Gender Equality organised by the European Commission on the occasion of the International Women's Day, 8 March 2010. Approximately 50,000 children aged between eight and ten from 61 countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, the Pacific, Latin America, the Middle East and the EU's Eastern Neighbours have participated in this year's competition. The two 10-year olds from Algeria and Syria are the winners for the Middle East and North Africa region.
 
The drawing by the Syrian winner, Mohammad Izzo from Damascus, is entitled, ‘Women, like Men, can bring Justice’, and shows male and female judges presiding together in the same court room. The entry from Lila Gazaili from Algeria, is titled, ‘To succeed in life and build a good world, the best way is to study at school. After the boy and girl manage to find different works, they can build their future and improve their quality of life and of the world.’
 
The winners are awarded a prize of €1,000 each, which will be used to buy books, computers, pay for school or library fees or other education materials. (ENPI Info Centre)
