€47.7 million from the EU for Palestinian salaries and pensions

The European Union is providing a contribution of €47.7 million to assist the Palestinian Authority with the payment of December salaries and pensions of almost 85,000 Palestinian civil servants and pensioners, both in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. "The European Union's continuing financial support to the Palestinian Authority underlines the confidence that Europe has in the PA's institutions and their ability to provide essential public services. This support will continue in 2012 while the PA moves forward its objective of fiscal sustainability and economic viability", said John Gatt-Rutter, the Acting EU Representative.
 
A press release on 5 January said this contribution, channelled through PEGASE, the European mechanism for support to the Palestinians, is being provided by the European Commission (€26.2 million) as well as the governments of Spain (€20.0 million), Ireland (€1.0 million) and Luxembourg (€0.5 million).
 
Expressing his appreciation to these countries for their generous contribution, John Gatt-Rutter added: "I would like to thank the Governments of Spain, Ireland and Luxembourg for their respective contributions and for entrusting the PEGASE mechanism with channelling their funds."
 
PEGASE channels EU assistance to help build a Palestinian State, in accordance with the priorities and needs identified by the Palestinian Authority in its three-year reform and development programme (PRDP) and the subsequent PA Palestinian National Plan (2011-2013). Since 2008, €1.12 billion have been disbursed through PEGASE Direct Financial Support programmes. As well as helping the PA to meet a substantial proportion of its running costs, European funds support major reform and development programmes in key ministries, to help prepare the Palestinian Authority for statehood in line with the plan proposed in August 2009 by Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.
 
In addition, the EU has provided assistance to the Palestinian people through UNRWA for a wide range of cooperation projects. (ENPI Info Centre)
