EU Delegation newsletter focuses on agricultural development, food quality and entrepreneurship in Lebanon
09-01-2012
The latest issue of the newsletter published by the EU Delegation to Lebanon showcases the EU's efforts to support agricultural and rural development while promoting food quality and entrepreneurship in the country, leading with an interview featuring the Minister of Agriculture Hussein Al Hajj Hassan.
The sixteen-page publication, published in English, French and Arabic, includes a special section dedicated to the Agricultural and Rural Development Programme (ARDP), an EU-funded programme (€14 million) to be implemented by the Lebanese Ministry of Agriculture until 2015.
The newsletter underscores the role of business incubators in encouraging entrepreneurship in Northern Lebanon, Beirut, and Southern Lebanon with the support of the European Union. Through the QUALEB programme, the EU seeks to ensure the quality of Lebanese products and their conformity to international standards, with an additional €4 million granted for the 2010-2013 period to further improve the Lebanese quality infrastructure. A number of EU-backed initiatives are highlighted, including the Euro Lebanese Centre for Industrial Modernisation (ELCIM), which benefits Lebanese industries in areas spanning agro-food, software and manufacturing.
Other articles showcase the individual contributions of EU Member States, namely Italy’s support to the cooperative of producers in olive-growing regions, and Spain’s four-year programme to improve the productive capacity of the agricultural sector in Southern Lebanon.
The newsletter also features the third meeting of the EU Lebanon Sub-Committee on Economic and Financial Affairs, held on 20 September 2011 in the context of the European-Lebanon Association Agreement, with a view to promoting dialogue between the EU and Lebanon, and discussing reforms in the country.
In the realm of culture, the newsletter makes a reference to the 18th Edition of the European FilmFestival (24 November- 4 December 2011), which contributed to promoting Lebanese cinema, including helping young Lebanese filmmakers in showcasing their short films. A special article titled ‘Murals of Change: bridging differences through mural art’, recounts the success story of the EU-funded Murals of Change project, which aimed at fostering cultural and religious diversity and respect amongst three groups of twenty-five youths from different regions of Lebanon through mural art and other activities.(ENPI Info Centre)
