Egyptian Film in the spotlight at EU-project festival

 From 19 to 22 January 2012, the Egyptian capital Cairo is hosting the Masry Asly Film Festival, an Itinerant Film Festival organized in the framework of the EU co-funded Project Rising Stars – Itinerant Cinema in Egypt. The aim of the project is to support and enhance independent Egyptian productions through workshops, open public screenings, production of short documentaries and a film festival to disseminate the work of Egyptian filmmakers all over the country.

 
A press release said Masry Asly (Original Egyptian) is the main theme of this Festival which will present a collection of films made by Egyptians, produced in Egypt or talking about Egypt, under the artistic direction of the Cinema Critic Essam Zakarea.
 
The first stop of the Festival is in Cairo, at the Italian Cultural Institute (Zamalek) and is composed of:
(I) a Competition Section opened to short films;
(II) an Extra Section: an open window for the Egyptian independent filmmakers’ productions; and
(III) the Rising Stars Section which will screen the short documentaries produced by the Rising Stars workshops' participants. A Photo Exhibition -with backstage and still photos from the Rising Stars documentaries’ production- will accompany the screenings.
 
Masry Asly screenings take place from 19-22 January at 6.30 pm, in the Italian Cultural Institute of Cairo - 3 El Sheikh El Marsafi, Zamalek (in front of Beano’s) and entrance is free.
 
After that, a selection of Masry Asly screenings will move to Port Said (28-30 January, Alliance Française de Port Saïd) and Minya (2-4 February, Jesuits’ & Brothers’ Association).
 
The Rising Stars Project and the Masry Asly Film Festival are implemented by Ricerca e Cooperazione NGO (www.ongrc.org) in partnership with SEMAT House for Production and Distribution (www.sematcairo.com) and in collaboration with: the Italian Cultural Institute, the Institut Français d’Egypte and Baad el Bahr Cultural Association.
 
The EU also funds a regional programme, Euromed Audiovisual, which aims to contribute to intercultural dialogue and cultural diversity through support to building cinematographic and audiovisual capacity in the region.(ENPI Info Centre)
