Egypt: EU presses authorities over continued crackdown on civil society

The EU today urged the Egyptian authorities to allow civil society organisations to play a key role in the democratic transition in the country.
 
In a statement issued in Brussels, the spokesperson of Catherine Ashton, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs said: “As Egypt moves forward in its democratic transition, it is vital to allow civil society organisations to play their crucial role as a pillar of a modern, open and democratic society.
The EU urges the Egyptian authorities to ensure that any inspections of civil society organisations which receive foreign funding be done in line with appropriate legal procedures.”
 
The statement went on to call on the Egyptian authorities to respect freedom of association and to adopt a Law on Associations and Foundations that would be consistent with international standards. (ENPI Info Centre)
