Egypt: Ashton hopes swift investigation will shed light on football riot

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton has expressed her sorrow at the heavy loss of life during football riots in Port Said on Wednesday, saying she hoped “an immediate and independent investigation will shed light on the causes of this tragic event”.
 
Ashton said she had conveyed her deepest condolences to the people of Egypt for the tragic loss of so many lives, adding her thoughts were with the families and friends of the victims.
 
Her views were echoed by Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner responsible for sport, who issued a statement today, saying she was deeply saddened and shocked by the terrible scenes and loss of life witnessed in Port Said: “As with all sports, football can give rise to intense passions, but the events we have seen at the stadium are completely unacceptable.” (ENPI Info Centre)
