From Agadir to the Libyan border: UfM submits Trans-Maghreb Motorway Axis Project to enhance regional trade

The Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) has submitted to member states a project on the Maghreb Motorway Axis. This project aims to provide easy and safe access and flow of goods and persons, which are essential for maintaining relations and enhancing regional trade, and will contribute to a closer integration between the countries of the Mediterranean.

A press release said the project would complete the missing links of the Central Section of the Trans-Maghreb Motorway Axis, between Oujda (Morocco) and the western Algerian border (22km), at a cost of €70 million, and between Bou Salem (Tunisia) and the eastern Algerian border (80km), by constructing a motorway with at least two lanes which will cost €600 million.

In this way, the Algerian, Moroccan and Tunisian national motorway networks will provide a corridor from Agadir (Morocco) to Ras Jedir (Tunisian-Libyan border), which will make transport connections faster, cheaper and more efficient to the benefit of the citizens and businesses.
