Delegation of MEPs in Rabat for Union for the Mediterranean Assembly

A delegation of 25 MEPs, led by European Parliament President Martin Schulz, will take part in the Union for the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly in Rabat (Morocco), on 24 and 25 March. MEPs have a key role in supporting fellow parliamentarians in the Arab Spring countries' transition to democracy. Economic developments in the region, and the situation in Syria, will also be discussed.

"I am convinced that a comprehensive partnership with the southern shore of the Mediterranean can be a powerful lever to relaunch growth for the EU, Northern Africa and the Middle East," said Martin Schulz. "With the recent vote on the trade agreement with Morocco, the European Parliament proved that it is serious about improving relations with its southern neighbours. Our support for democratic reforms and transformations in the Mediterranean region needs to be accompanied with tangible actions."

The Union for the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly's 8th plenary session takes place under the Moroccan Presidency, which will then hand over the Presidency to the EU.

Ten resolutions will be debated and put to vote in committee meetings on Saturday and in plenary on Sunday, including:

  • Which Euro-Mediterranean partnership to respond to the new context of democratic transition in the Mediterranean?

  • Towards a comprehensive Euro-Mediterranean financial framework for the economic development of the region.
  • Perspectives for the Mediterranean Youth.
  • Migration, employment and integration.
  • The role of women in the democratisation process andgovernance in the Euro-Mediterranean region. (ENPI Info Centre)
