Egypt to host 5th Spring Festival

The Egyptian cities of Cairo, Alexandria, Minya and Assiut will be hosting fifth edition of the Spring Festival, organised by the EU Delegation to Egypt, from 20 April to 14 May 2012. This multidisciplinary festival includes music and dance shows, but also storytelling evenings, public discussions and workshops.

Spring Festival 2012, which will bring together a wide range of the most prominent contemporary artists from Europe, Central Asia, the Arab region and the USA will start with a celebration of Turkish music entitled ‘Turkish Coffee’. The opening concert will be a mix of strong solos, duets, improvisations as well as compositions performed by the whole group. This year’s programme features a whole range of musical genres and international groups including: Checkpoint 303 - Palestine/ Tunisia/ France, Dima Dima –Tunisia and Zapp 4 –The Netherlands.
The festival is bringing together five acclaimed musicians from Central Asia to perform in an evening concert entitled "The Invisible Face of the Beloved” followed by two colorful performances by the Tausi Women’s Taarab Orchestra from Zanzibar. A concert of the Iranian/ British band AJAM, presented with the support of the British Council in Egypt, will conclude the festival on 14th of May. The Festival will also feature two contemporary dance performances and a Turkish shadow puppeteer show as well as a panel discussion and a series of storytelling evenings.
This festival is organized in collaboration with the Cultural Cooperative Association for Youth in Theatre and Cinema SHAMS, and with the support of Doen Foudnation, The Open Society Foundations, Aga Khan Music Initiative, the Netherlands Embassy, Goethe Institute and the British Council.
