Trade, economic ties, education and innovation: EU-Lebanon talks to boost cooperation across key sectors
03-05-2012

The European Union and the Lebanese Government are holding a series of thematic subcommittee meetings in Beirut from 2 to 4 May, aiming to promote dialogue between the EU and Lebanon and to discuss reforms in the country. The three meetings will discuss: Trade, Industry and Services; Internal Market; and Research, Innovation, Information Society, Education and Culture
These meetings take place in the framework of the European Neighbourhood Policy and illustrate the ongoing commitment of the Lebanese Government to strengthen its cooperation with the EU and to advance in the implementation of reforms jointly agreed in the Lebanon-EU Action Plan.
Discussions will focus on:
- ways to enhance the trade between Lebanon and the EU through trade development and further liberalisation in the trade of goods and services.
- the steps taken by Lebanon to advance its accession to the WTO, and of Lebanon's existing and planned regional trade agreements.
- Lebanon's efforts to bring its regulatory environment closer to the EU, including in the areas of competition, consumer protection, and intellectual property rights, establishment and company laws and statistical analysis. The EU will also give an overview of the situation of legislation on intellectual property rights, public procurement, statistics, and financial services in Europe.
- policies related to culture and to various types of media, including the Internet and audiovisual media. The EU will provide an update on the ongoing and extensive support provided in these areas.
The third subcommittee will seek to address a wide range of issues that relate to Lebanon's future development, looking at policies and commitments in advancing science, technology and research and development, but also the broad spectrum of education.
The meetings will be attended by representatives from the relevant Lebanese ministries, officials from EU headquarters in Brussels and representatives from the Embassies of EU Member States accredited to Lebanon. (EU Neighbourhood Info)
