Writing the Mediterranean in Alexandria

Writers, journalists, artists and cultural activists came together in Alexandria last week for the third edition of the literary encounters Ecrire la Méditerranée, organised by the Anna Lindh Foundation in collaboration with the French Institute of Egypt in Alexandria.

The programme was composed of a series on conferences, round-table debates, film screenings, and exhibitions with the purpose of exploring the new cultural dynamics initiated by the young generations in the Mediterranean area. To complement the views offered by writers, the event gave the opportunity to journalists, artists and cultural activists of the Mediterranean to confront their visions in an open and multidisciplinary approach.

Topics covered by the debates included the potential of arts in changing societies, the contribution of women to contemporary literature in the Mediterranean, and the role of youth in reinventing democracy.

The event took place on 25-28 April at the premises of the French Institute in Alexandria. Main partners of the event included the Mediterranean Centre of Literature, the Museums of Civilisations of Europe and the Mediterranean and the Cultural Council of the Union for the Mediterranean.

The Anna Lindh Foundation for Inter-Cultural Dialogue promotes knowledge, mutual respect and inter-cultural dialogue between the people of the Euro-Mediterranean region, working through a network of more than 3,000 civil society organisations in 43 countries. Its budget is co-funded by the EU (€7 million) and the EU member states (€6 million).
