Catherine Ashton receives BusinessMed Blue Award
31-05-2012

This year the annual BusinessMed Blue Award has been given to EU High Representative Catherine Ashton for her efforts in promoting peace and economic development in the Mediterranean region. The Blue Award ceremony took place during BusinessMed’s General Assembly held in Brussels on 30 May.
The Blue award – also known as “Mare Nostrum” – is a prize awarded each year to a personality selected by the Union of Mediterranean Confederations of Enterprises (BusinessMed).
On receiving the award Catherine Ashton remarked that, “It is a great honour for me to receive the 2011 BusinessMed Blue award. I take it as call by the private sector for the European External Action Service and the Commission to pursue their collective effort to promote stability and economic development in the Mediterranean region.”
The High Representative concluded her speech with these words: "The private sector and business organizations will play a decisive role in the success of transition. They will have to be listened to when expressing their needs and their expectations. At a time of hard economic choices, the business community can be a strong voice in favour of a more inclusive growth and sustainable market integration.”
BusinessMed is a regional professional organisation created in January 2004 to accelerate the integration and the social and economic development in the region. BUSINESSMED headquarters are based in Tunis. This location ensures permanent contact with the federations of the twelve Mediterranean Partner Countries that it represents. BusinessMed’s main objective is economic integration within Europe and World economy. (EU Neighbourhood Info)
