Local guides in Siwa trained by Euromed Heritage

An awareness training on heritage and etiquette delivered to 20 tour guides of the donkey carts in the Egyptian oasis of Siwa was held over three days earlier this month. The training, led by a local artist in close touch with the issue of the importance of traditional heritage and general aesthetics, was organized in the framework of the EU-funded project “SIWA & TANGIER: a Heritage for a Better Life”, part of the EuroMed Heritage IV programme.

The training was meant to tackle several topics, which aimed at enhancing the performance and quality of service of the local guides. They have been encouraged to increase their knowledge of different aspects of Siwa to be able to paint relevant images for tourists about the oasis.

This training was part of an awareness plan by the project targeting various groups in Siwa working around the field of tourism, like bazaar shopkeepers, hotel staff, restaurant staff, etc. through which the Idea of the Open Air Museum and the tourist circuits is presented and linked with the function of the Heritage Documentation Centre in Siwa.

The Project “SIWA & TANGIER: a heritage for a better life” is implemented by COSPE in partnership with SCDEC Association (Siwa Community Development and Environmental Conservation) in Siwa and the Kasbah Museum in Tangier – Morocco. The project is funded by the European Union under the EuroMed Heritage IV Programme and aims to promote better knowledge and understanding of local cultural assets. The action builds around its specific objective to create effective management tools for sustainable protection of the tangible and intangible heritage in Tangiers and Siwa by fostering community participation and facilitating access to education and knowledge of the cultural heritage.

EuroMed Heritage IV is a €17 million EU-funded programme which contributes to the exchange of experiences on cultural heritage, creates networks and promotes cooperation with the Mediterranean Partner Countries. It focuses on the appropriation by the local populations of their cultural heritage and favours access to education and knowledge of cultural heritage. It supports a framework for the exchange of experiences, channels for the dissemination of best practices and new perspectives aimed at the development of an institutional cultural environment.
