EU and Jordan discuss human rights issues
04-06-2012
The seventh round of the Human Rights, Governance and Democracy Subcommittee between Jordan and the European Union took place in Amman last week. This human rights dialogue with Jordan falls in the context of the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP), Jordan being the first ENP partner to hold regular human rights subcommittee meetings with the EU.
The EU-Jordan human rights dialogue was held in a collaborative and open atmosphere, focusing on the ongoing process of reforms-related legislation and on the human rights matters linked to the implementation of the ENP EU-Jordan Action Plan.
On these key issues, the EU has reaffirmed its will to support the path of home-grown reforms taken by Jordan, in order to promote democratic institutions based on wide and equitable representation; to ensure freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly with the full participation of civil society, as an engine of democratic process; to consolidate freedom of religion or belief, to prevent any acts of torture and degrading treatment, and ensure accountability; to guarantee equal treatment of women and to protect child rights.
The Subcommittee also discussed EU- Jordan cooperation in multilateral fora such as in the Human Rights Council and the Third Committee of UNGA 67, as well as the Universal Periodic Review (second cycle). The EU will ensure local follow up with the Jordan authorities on the work of this Subcommittee, notably through its "Human Rights Working Group" based in the country and in liaison with civil society.
The European Union, to date, is engaged in dedicated human rights discussions with close to 40 countries around the world. (EU Neighbourhood Info)
