Top travel guidebooks pay tribute to Mutual Heritage work in Morocco

The contribution of the Mutual Heritage project devoted to recent architectural and urban heritage in the Mediterranean has been acknowledged by two of the top international travel guides, Le Guide du Routard and the Michelin green guidebook, which both feature the project in the columns of their 2012 editions for Morocco. Mutual Heritage, funded by the EU under the Euromed Heritage IV programme, aims to identify, document and promote recent cultural heritage, and to encourage its integration in the current economic and social situation.

For Le guide du Routard, Mutual Heritage is a cultural referent able to “make you learn everything you need to know about the architectural and recent urban heritage (19th and 20th century) in Morocco and in the Mediterranean world, about the regional and European influences on it, about its place in the country's history and how it is assimilated by the population. An approach that sheds light on the Sharifian kingdom from a different perspective" (p. 68).

For the Michelin Green Guide, in addition to having written two pages about Casablanca (Casablanca, the tradition of modernity, pp. 282 and 283), the guide book has placed Mutual Heritage in the acknowledgments and has given it a box in the "Art and Culture" chapter: "Mutual Heritage, the project funded by the European Union within the framework of the Euromed Heritage 4, aims to identify, to document and to promote the recent heritage of the 19th and 20th centuries in the Mediterranean. The aim is to encourage the integration of cultural heritage in current economic and social life. For more information visit www.mutualheritage.net".

Mutual Heritage’s objectives are:
·         To sustain the development of a network of well trained professionals able to mobilise and optimise skills and resources in each country
·         To improve competences, knowledge and skills of heritage preservation among operators (private and public), professionals and administrations with the aim to improve the management capacities
·         To improve and diffuse an appropriate image of recent architectural and urban heritage among national and international tourists
·         To improve heritage knowledge among the youth, proposing appropriate educational tools and initiatives

EuroMed Heritage IV is a €17 million EU-funded programme which contributes to the exchange of experiences on cultural heritage, creates networks and promotes cooperation with the Mediterranean Partner Countries. It focuses on the appropriation by the local populations of their cultural heritage and favours access to education and knowledge of cultural heritage. It supports a framework for the exchange of experiences, channels for the dissemination of best practices and new perspectives aimed at the development of an institutional cultural environment.
