Examining the impact of Euromed Heritage actions in Algeria

The European Union Delegation in Algiers is inviting the media, voluntary associations and civil society representatives to a press conference on Sunday 18 June 2012 to assess the situation in Algeria after the implementation of five EU-funded heritage projects in the country. This event is organized in collaboration with Algerian Radio, and the EuroMed Heritage projects Manumed, REMEE, MED-MEM, Montada, and Athena.

Between 2009 and 2012, five heritage actions were held in Algeria, implemented by different entities, public institutions, civil society organisations and research organizations. These actions – whose general objective is the preservation and valuation of tangible and intangible heritage – have contributed in promoting the need to take heritage into consideration in sustainable development policies.

This conference will present concrete results that the actions achieved and to evaluate their impact, particularly in:
• The mobilisation of the public, especially young people
• Training actions
• Heritage appropriation by local communities
• The reinforcement of dialogue between civil society and government
• Intercultural dialogue at the Mediterranean level

This event will be enhanced by a collective exhibition gathering the various projects, including an exhibition entitled 'The Memory of Water in the Mediterranean' and works that have been published within the Euromed-Heritage IV programme framework.

EuroMed Heritage IV is a €17 million EU-funded programme which contributes to the exchange of experiences on cultural heritage, creates networks and promotes cooperation with the Mediterranean Partner Countries. It focuses on the appropriation by the local populations of their cultural heritage and favours access to education and knowledge of cultural heritage. It supports a framework for the exchange of experiences, channels for the dissemination of best practices and new perspectives aimed at the development of an institutional cultural environment.
