After the Arab Spring: youth work reality in Tunisia

A week of activities is currently taking place in Tunisia around the theme of youth work and youth policy in the wake of the Arab Spring. The study visit began on Monday, and has brought together participants from EuroMed Youth programme countries and from EU member states.
 
The series of meetings and visits, which runs from 25 June to 1 July, is co-organised by the Tunisian Ministry of Sport and Youth, SALTO Euromed, the Tunisian Euromed Youth Unit and the Regional Capacity Building and Support Unit for the EuroMed Youth IV Programme.
 
The activities offer an opportunity to discover, reflect and share experiences about youth work in society and to create partnerships for cooperation, aiming to understand the changes since the revolution and the role of newly-created associations in social development.
 
The study visit aims to cover the following themes:
  • discover and learn about youth, youth policy and youth work realities in Tunisia;
  • share experiences and practices;
  • foster mutual knowledge and understanding;
  • promote sustainable contacts between youth NGOs aiming at future development of projects within the Youth in Action and Euromed Youth Programmes.
 
The programme tackles topics such as the place and role of youth in the revolution, the current situation of youth and its needs, and the reality of youth work in Tunisia. It is organising several meetings with the EU Delegation and Ministry of Youth, visits to different youth organisations and institutions around the country, and presentations of current European Youth Programmes.
 
The study visit is also providing the basis for a new study on 'Youth work in Tunisia after the revolution'. The publication will be part of a new collection dedicated to youth work in the Mediterranean partner countries.
 
The €5million EU-funded EuroMed Youth IV programme (2010-2013) aims at stimulating and encouraging mutual comprehension among youth in the Euro-Mediterranean region, fighting stereotypes and prejudices and enhancing the sense of solidarity among youth by promoting active citizenship. It also seeks to contribute to the development of youth policies in the Mediterranean Partner Countries.
