Union for the Mediterranean: Jordan set to assume southern co-presidency

Jordan has said it would be willing to assume the southern co-presidency of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), taking over from Egypt. The announcement came yesterday at a meeting of senior officials of the UfM in Barcelona, according to a press release from the UfM Secretariat.

The press release said UfM representatives unanimously welcomed the Jordanian announcement. The northern co-presidency has been assumed by the European Union since March, 2012, taking over from France.

"With the EU-Jordan Co-presidency, the UFM enters a new phase of its evolution and will enable it to provide the needed value added for strengthened regional cooperation in the Mediterranean," the press release said.

Yesterday's meeting was also attended by the Vice-President of the European Investment Bank (EIB), Philippe de Fontaine Vive, who confirmed the willingness of the EIB to provide €500 million to support mature UfM projects, confirming the EIB's overall commitment to be a major player in the development of socio-economic projects in the region.

During the meeting, the UfM Secretariat presented three new projects: Skills for Success: Employability skills for women; Creation of a Euro Mediterranean University in Fez; and Overcoming Governance Challenges to the Mobilization of Financing for the Mediterranean Water Sector.

Furthermore, a progress report of UfM labelled projects already in progress was presented, covering: LOGISMEDTA and Trans-Maghreb Highway; Gaza Desalination Project as well as a presentation of the state of play of the Mediterranean Solar Plan. (EU Neighbourhood Info)
