Project about sustainable management of water in Mediterranean tourist areas holds final conference
01-07-2012

The final conference of a project about the sustainable management of water in the tourist areas of the Mediterranean, known as ‘TourMedEau’, took place in Djerba-Ajim, Tunisia, from the 29-30 June 2012. The project is funded by the EU’s Ciudad Programme - Dialogue and Cooperation in Urban Development.
The aim of the first day’s meeting was to disseminate the results of the project at local and national level among the main stakeholders and to ease the path towards the construction of a tertiary wastewater treatment station in Djerba Ajim. On the second day, the Fête de la Palmeraie was organised to promote the rehabilitation of palm groves and local agriculture through the use of recycled water. A small tertiary treatment pilot plant was to be inaugurated in order to show how recycled water could be used. There were also to be various activities to show the local population of Ajim the opportunities generated by tertiary wastewater treatment and reuse.
The TourMedEau project is funded by the European Union under the Ciudad Programme - Dialogue and Cooperation in Urban Development through the European Neighbourhood Partnership Instrument (ENPI), planned to help local governments of ENPI regions in improving their ability to plan for a sustainable, integrated and long-term urban development, according to the principles of good governance.
The aim of the project is to encourage dialogue and cooperation between the local authorities of Tunisia, Morocco and Italy, to improve the sustainability of the environment in the territories of Djerba-Ajim in Tunisia and Al Hoceima in Morocco.
More broadly, TourMedEau also contributes to promoting dialogue and cooperation between public administrations of the two Mediterranean shores, in order to improve environmental sustainability in urban areas through a more efficient public management of water services. (EU Neighbourhood Info)
