Syrian DOCmed participant selected for Arab Fund for Arts and Culture Crossroads grant

A DOCmed documentary project from Syria is one of five film projects from the southern Mediterranean to receive funding and professional support from the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC) Crossroads programme. Hazem Alhamwi, a 2011 participant in DOCmed, a training programme supported by Euromed Audiovisual and AFAC, will receive support to complete Caravan in a Room, a retrospective narrative to describe the impact of the political regime on Syrian citizens.

“What is happening now in Syria is a step in the struggle for a better society and more freedom,” wrote the filmmaker and cartoonist. “I wish the film to be honest about what is happening in the manner of art as non-violent human expression.”

Jury members selected six projects from over 142 applications sent in from around the Arab world. Beyond financial support, the selected projects will receive professional support in development, production, post-production, promotion, and distribution.
DOCmed is a training programme, designed for Arab professionals in the documentary films domain who have a project that qualifies to be produced as an international coproduction.

The Euromed Audiovisual III programme aims to contribute to the development and strengthening of the capacity of the film sector in the ENPI South region (Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Occupied Palestinian Territory, Syria, Tunisia) and to contribute significantly to mutual understanding, intercultural dialogue and cultural diversity, in line with the 'Strategy for the Development of Euro-Mediterranean Audiovisual Cooperation', approved by Euromed culture ministers in Athens in May 2008.
