Schulz congratulates Algeria on 50th anniversary of independence as Parliament hosts exhibition

The President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz has issued a statement congratulating the Algerian people on the 50th anniversary of the independence of Algeria today.

"I congratulate the Algerian people on reaching this important milestone," he said. "Algeria has overcome many challenges and hurdles in its first 50 years since independence. I would like to pay tribute to Algerian citizens who have never bowed when faced with violence and terrorism: they have withstood them with remarkable unity, dignity and courage."

Schulz said the anniversary should also be "an opportunity to reflect on the path ahead for Algeria".

"The dynamism of the Algerian youth is the biggest unexploited reserve of the country. Responding to the aspirations of the new generations, through the full participation to economic and political life of the country, must remain a national priority," the President of the European Parliament said.

He added that regional integration in the Maghreb would also favour an acceleration in the path of growth, employment and stability, adding the EU warmly supported recent progress made in this direction.

President Schulz said the recent legislative elections marked a new stage in Algeria's democratisation process, welcoming in particular, the advancements made in the representation of women in the People's National Assembly.

From 10-13 July, the European Parliament will host an exhibition – Alger, regards croisés – of photos taken in 2010 by European and Algerian photographers, as part of a project organised by the EU Delegation in Algiers. (EU Neighbourhood Info)
