Euromed Audiovisual workshop discusses film distribution in the Mediterranean
08-07-2012

The EU-funded Euromed Audiovisual III project held a workshop in Jordan on 5 and 6 July, aiming to create a network of distributors and to strengthen the role of sales agents in the Mediterranean region. Over 50 film professionals, including the region’s most prominent distributors, took part in this workshop.
In the morning, participants were introduced to examples of inspiring film distribution initiatives from around the world. In the afternoon, the discussion evolved around the role of sales agents in the region. Most participants agreed that a network should be created to better represent the region’s films in the big markets.
“We need help from Euromed Audiovisual to create a structure to finalise sales deals with foreign partners,” said Sahar El-Sherbini, sales manager at Al Arabiya. Jonathon Perchal, distributor at Artificial Eye, spoke about distribution agreements and current industry trends for independent film distributors. “This new digital world was supposed to save everyone costs and allow greater freedom with filmmaking, [but] reality is very different,” he concluded. Finally, Sophie Juin from Bac Films, talked about the deliverables and technical material involved in digital distribution.
The Euromed Audiovisual III programme aims to contribute to the development and strengthening of the capacity of the film sector in the ENPI South region (Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Occupied Palestinian Territory, Syria, Tunisia) and to contribute significantly to mutual understanding, intercultural dialogue and cultural diversity, in line with the "Strategy for the Development of Euro-Mediterranean Audiovisual Cooperation", approved by Euromed culture ministers in Athens in May 2008.
