Morocco: health care reforms at the heart of EU-funded programmes

EU Head of Delegation to Morocco, Ambassador Eneko Landaburu, will on 11 and 12 July visit the health facilities in the region of Tadla Azilal, by following the journey of a beneficiary of the medical assistance scheme to the economically disadvantaged (RAMED), implemented by Morocco and to which the European Union is contributing. The objective of the visit is to assess the improvement of care supply in the structures of the different levels.

The European Union has granted financial support and accompanied the major structural health reforms undertaken by Morocco since 2001, in order to improve and ensure the access to equity and quality care for all the Moroccan citizens,” declared Mr. Landaburu. “The region of Tadla Azilal was the first region where the RAMED, one of the key components of this reform, was implemented,” he added.

With donations that totaled €126 million, the European Union supports the health sector with two programmes which aim at:
·         improving health care, focusing on equity between regions, on maternal and child health, on chronic diseases,
·         permanently improving the conditions of access to the socially disadvantaged population.

The European Union supports the implementation of basic medical coverage with the mandatory health insurance scheme (AMO – Assurance Maladie Obligatoire) and, since 2008, the medical assistance scheme to the economically disadvantaged (RAMED).

So far, 1.5 million RAMED beneficiaries have been declared eligible, out of a global objective of 8.5 million by 2014. Tadla Azilal was the pilot region for the experimental implementation of RAMED before being rolled out to the whole country this year.

Mr. Landaburu will also visit two olive-growing facilities, a wastewater treatment plant and a community health awareness centre in the framework of other EU-funded cooperation programmes in the provinces of Fquih Ben Saleh, Beni Mellal and Azilal. (EU Neighbourhood Info)
