EU funded Athena project tours the cultural sites of Tunisia

A group from the Euromed Heritage funded ATHENA project, that deals with preserving ancient theatres across Jordan, Italy, Spain, Algeria and Tunisia, visited Tunisia recently with participants combining meetings aimed at strengthening relations and cooperation, with tours to Roman theatres and other heritage sites.

The trip started in the capital “which brings together different cultures that centred on ancient theatres and past civilizations,” writes Marwan Asmar in his account of the visit published on the Euromed Heritage website.
“It was a pleasant trip in a francophone Arab country, assembling delegates with different cultures of Arabic, Italian, and Spanish tongues, tarnished with French, English and Berber touches that intermingled with different thoughts and views,” he writes.

The ATHENA project aims to minimize the progressive decay of ancient theatres and support their revival as a part of a wider archaeological site or urban context. It also seeks to establish an overall strategy for dealing with tangible and intangible heritage aspects.

EuroMed Heritage IV is a €17 million EU-funded programme which contributes to the exchange of experiences on cultural heritage, creates networks and promotes cooperation with the Mediterranean Partner Countries. It focuses on the appropriation by the local populations of their cultural heritage and favours access to education and knowledge of cultural heritage. It supports a framework for the exchange of experiences, channels for the dissemination of best practices and new perspectives aimed at the development of an institutional cultural environment.
