EU welcomes alignment of third countries to restrictive measures against Syria

The EU has welcomed the alignment of Moldova, Georgia and other third countries with the decision of the Council of the European Union to strengthen the enforcement of its arms embargo against Syria.

A declaration by the EU Foreign Affairs Chief said the third countries that aligned themselves are Croatia, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Iceland, Serbia, Albania, Liechtenstein, Norway, as well as the Republic of Moldova and Georgia.

Council Decision 2012/420/CFSP, adopted on 23 July 2012, strengthens the enforcement of restrictive measures  concerning arms and equipment for internal repression set out in a previous Council Decision 2011/782/CFSP, in particular by imposing the obligation to inspect, in accordance with national legislation and consistent with international law, all vessels and aircraft bound for Syria in their seaports and airports, and in their territorial sea, if there is reasonable ground to believe the cargo of such vessels and aircraft contains prohibited goods.
