Gender portrayal on TV: Euromed News develops Arabic toolkit to encourage new approaches
09-06-2010
The EU-funded project Euromed News has produced a toolkit that addresses the issue of how women are portrayed on television, dedicated to audiovisual experts.
The 77-minute video, with Arabic accompanying text and subtitles, is primarily aimed at media professionals for use in training, as well as in programme development and evaluation. The material will also be helpful to journalism and communication students, consumer associations and other groups concerned with how the media operate.
Based on the project’s own research, programme examples from partner companies were selected to illustrate common patterns in gender portrayal. The material also demonstrates alternative approaches to programme production.
The videoshows sequences, including some specially produced for this kit, from drama to talk shows to news, to illustrate the improvement in quality gained by paying attention to gender portrayal. It also includes personal accounts from programme-makers who have dealt with the challenges raised by Screening Gender.
The EuroMed-News project aims to broaden knowledge about the EU's policies in the region and the relationship between the EU and individual Mediterranean countries. Spearheaded by France Télévisions, it brings together broadcasters in Europe and in Algeria, Jordan, Libya, Syria, Morocco and Lebanon. Together, they will produce 300 news features, 40 short current affairs programmes and nine 26-minute documentaries.
EuroMed-News is funded under the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument (ENPI) through EuropeAid’s €19 million Regional Information and Communication Programme. (ENPI Info Centre)
