Tunisia to host Euro-Med energy efficiency workshop

15-07-2010

As part of coordinated regional efforts to improve end use energy efficiency (EE), the EU-funded Euro-Mediterranean Energy Market Integration Project (MED-EMIP) and the Energy Efficiency in the Construction Sector project II (MED-ENEC) are organising a joint workshop on ‘Demand Side Management (DSM) and National Energy Efficiency Action Plans (NEEAPs)’.

A press release said the workshop, to take place on 26 and 27 July 2010 in Tunisia, would be followed by the Arab League’s ‘Arab EE Directive Working Group’ meeting on 28-29 July. This two-day workshop is to initiate the process of preparing three-year National Energy Efficiency Action Plans (NEEAPs), according to the drafted Arab EE directive.

The Arab EE directive provides the long-term framework based on the EC End Use Energy Efficiency Directive. It has been developed by the Energy Department of the League of Arab states in cooperation with MED-EMIP.  The Arab EE Directive is concerned with end use electricity efficiency. It helps participating countries set indicative 10-year EE targets and to prepare three-year National Energy Efficiency Action Plans.

The purpose of this joint workshop is to initiate the bottom-up national coordination for the preparation of the NEEAP and to raise awareness of the recent regional policy development. It also aims to present European experiences of the coordination, benchmarking and follow-up of such coordinated regional efforts. The different organizing parties will also present their technical assistance plans and activities in support of the preparation and implementation of the NEEAP and the Arab EE directive.

Participating countries are expected to start preparing their NEEAP for the years 2011-2014 to be presented in a follow-up meeting taking place by the end of 2010.

MED-EMIP is a platform for energy policy dialogue and exchange of experiences, leading to enhanced Euro-Med cooperation, integration of the energy markets and improved security and sustainability. It is funded by the EU with a budget of € 4.1 million and runs between 2007 and 2010.
