EU to launch new Euromed Police project on back of current success

16-07-2010

The EU is to launch a new Euromed Police project next year, on the back of the “real success” of the current phase of the project, which comes to an end on 30 September this year, after three years of activities that involved more than 700 people covering all major aspects of organised crime, including terrorism, drug-trafficking, human trafficking, financial crime, and cyber crime.

The decision was announced at the final regional conference of the Euromed Police II project, held in Brussels this week, according to a press release from EuropeAid.

The €5 million project, implemented by the European Police College (CEPOL), targeted senior police executives from the Mediterranean partner countries (Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, the Palestinian Authority, Syria and Tunisia). Its objective was to create a network of professionals from both sides of the Mediterranean sea and enhance professional cooperation.

Since June 2007, activities have included meetings of General Directors, training seminars, study visits and the creation of internal communication tools.

Specifically, there were:
  • 15 training seminars on topics of organised crime that involved 314 officers from Mediterranean countries;
  • technical seminars on terrorism, drug trafficking, illegal immigration routes in the region, etc… aimed at the heads or deputy heads of special intervention units (45 officers);
  • study visits in specialised services within police services from several EU countries (35 officers) ;
  • meetings of the general directors of the Police/Security/Customs services (globally 250 officers).

The press release said the project had been a real success, especially given the political background in the area over the last three years. (ENPI Info Centre)
