UfM adopts new project to support women’s empowerment in the Mediterranean

A project aimed at developing women’s empowerment in the Mediterranean through the development of effective field projects and the setting up of networks and platforms, was adopted by Senior Officials of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) at a meeting held last month.
 
A press release said the project promoter is The Women's Foundation for the Mediterranean, an association that works for achieving women’s empowerment in the Euro-Mediterranean region. It is managed by the four countries that initiated the project (Lebanon, Jordan, Morocco and France) along with representatives from civil society.

The project arises from the need to develop new field projects supporting emancipation, empowerment and strengthening the role of women in the Euro-Mediterranean region, which is a major theme of the Union for the Mediterranean, placing it in a context of development, justice and peace.

The project will be implemented in a number of Southern Mediterranean Countries via branches. The first local branches will be set up in four countries: Amman (Jordan), Byblos (Lebanon), Marrakech (Morocco) and Paris (France). Another local branch will be established in Ramallah (Palestine).

In order to have close proximity to serve Euro-Mediterranean women’s practical needs, the project will be set in motion locally, particularly through local branches in close contact with local authorities and women’s associations in the field. Local authorities will be able to identify local needs as well as associations that will be in a better position to initiate projects able to meet identified expectations. (ENPI Info Centre)
