Ethics and Religion for the 21st Century Citizen discussed at Alexandria round table
17-01-2012

The Anna Lindh Foundation, the Spanish Embassy in Egypt, and the Instituto Cervantes are organising an encounter on the topic “Ethics and Religion for the 21st century citizen” on 17 January in Alexandria, gathering intellectuals, social activists and representatives of local and foreign institutions of the city.
A press release said the event was being organised on the occasion of the visit to Alexandria of the distinguished Spanish philosopher Adela Cortina, who will share her reflections about the construction of ethics and social values, providing a framework for the understanding of the evolution of the value system in contemporary societies.
Do different moral codes enable people to live together, to build a common future? Is there a set of values and ethical principles that a pluralistic society shares? Discovering the shared ethical capital, discovering ethics of the people as citizens and their implications for moral, political, economic and religious life as one of the challenges of the 21st century, are among the topics to be discussed.
To address these questions from the Egyptian point of view, Prof. Dr. Ali El Menufi, from Al Azhar University, Prof. Franco Greco, President of the Association of Italians in Egypt and Ms Sarah Hegazi, Cultural Activist and Teacher Assistant at Alexandria University, will present their perspective on the topic providing different overviews and stimulating the debate with the participants. The round table will be moderated by Mr Andreu Claret, Executive Director of the Anna Lindh Foundation.
The Anna Lindh Foundation for the Dialogue between Cultures is a €7 million EU-funded project which aims at bringing people and organisations of the region closer and promoting dialogue, by offering them opportunities to work together on projects in the fields of culture, education, science, human rights, sustainable development, the empowerment of women and the arts. The Foundation is the first institution to be jointly created and co-financed by all member countries of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership. (ENPI Info Centre)
