Public conference and debate on youth contribution to social, economic and political life

One year after the ‘Arab Spring’ and the waves of protest by young people in Europe, policy makers, academics, experts from the Mediterranean, projects and associations and other key players from several European and Mediterranean countries, will discuss and debate the lessons to be drawn from youth mobilisation, in a conference co-organised among others by the EU-funded Salto Youth project and the French agency of the EU Youth in Action programme, under the title “Euro-Mediterranean youth: from indignation to contribution”.

The conference, to take place on 10 February 2012 in Lyon, France, is organised by the French National Institute of Youth and Education (INJEP), the French Agency of the European programme "Youth in Action", the resource centre Salto-Youth EuroMed, University Lumière Lyon 2, the House of the East and the Mediterranean - Jean Pouilloux and the Group for Research and studies on the Mediterranean and the Middle East (GREMMO).

The conference is part of a cycle of events dedicated to youth policy in the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership. It marks the culmination of two days of work bringing together some fifty participants from several countries from both shores of the Mediterranean that will present a series of public recommendations on issues of learning, participation, employability, the information society and knowledge economy.

The EU also funds a regional programme EuroMed Youth IV during the period 2010-2013 with a budget of €5 million under the European Neighbourhood Policy. The programme aims at stimulating and encouraging mutual comprehension among youth in the Euro-Mediterranean region, fighting stereotypes and prejudices and enhancing the sense of solidarity among youth by promoting active citizenship. It also seeks to contribute to the development of youth policies in the Mediterranean Partner Countries. (ENPI Info Centre)
