Youth empowerment in the wake of the Arab Spring – apply now for Malta seminar
01-02-2012
Young people from the Euro-Mediterranean region are invited to apply to take part in a seminar to be held in Malta next month around the theme of ‘Empowerment of youth organisations and youth-led civil society initiatives in the South-Mediterranean framework’. The seminar aims to examine the impact of youth on the Arab revolutions and vice versa, and their role within the resulting transition process.
The event is being organised from 22-24 March in the framework of the partnership between the Council of Europe and the European Commission in the field of youth, in cooperation with the Arab League, North-South Centre of the Council of Europe, Maltese Youth Agency, and Euromed Youth Platform. The deadline for applications is 13 February.
According to a press release, the seminar will focus on the role and status of youth organisations and movements and the young people they work with, as crucial actors in the development and consolidation of inclusive, participatory and pluralistic democracies, based on human rights and the rule of law.
The main objectives are:
• To discuss the current effects of the Arab Spring on civil society and develop a shared understanding of the current situation of young people in the Southern Mediterranean, as well as in European countries, and their role in on-going processes of change;
• To understand the implications of this transition to democracy for the reality of youth, the youth agendas and for the landscape of youth led civil society organisations;
• To strengthen and support the role of civil society and non governmental youth led organisations and networks by enabling young people to reflect on their needs in terms of capacity building and to propose joint projects to be implemented on a long term basis in a wider partnership.
The seminar will bring together 30 young people from Southern Mediterranean and European youth organisations, facilitators, stakeholders and youth policy experts from the Euro-Mediterranean region.
It is open to professionals and volunteers closely involved in youth policy processes in their youth organisations and countries, young multipliers closely involved in democratic youth movements in their countries, leaders of youth organisations having an active role in the developments of the Arab Spring, bloggers and youth workers.
A detailed presentation of the seminar, as well as the application procedure can be found here.
Applications should be submitted on-line by 13 February 2012. (ENPI Info Centre)
