A Sea of Words 2012: Writing contest promotes vision and expectations of young people in the Mediterranean

The Anna Lindh Foundation and the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed) are calling the fifth year of the international short story contest “A Sea of Words” for young people from the 42 countries of the Euro-Mediterranean space. The contest aims at the production of short stories focusing on the issues of children, parents and grandparents facing the future, with the objective of showing the different sensitivities and realities in the Euro-Mediterranean region, from the point of view of the youths who live there.

The objective of the contest “A Sea of Words” is to contribute to the encouragement of dialogue between peoples, and exchange of knowledge and experiences between different local and international traditions. However, in the framework of the European Year for Solidarity between Generations, this year’s theme aims at promoting the vision and expectations of young people about their future and the contact between different generations of Euro-Mediterranean societies.

Young people between the age of 18 and 30 can send in short stories of no more than 2500 words, which can be written in any of the official languages of the participant countries. They must be original and unpublished works and address issues related to intercultural dialogue, mainly of a political, socio-cultural, economic and environmental nature.

The authors of the twenty best short stories will be awarded with the publication of their short stories and participation in the Awards Presentation in Barcelona on 5 November 2012 and toa programme of cultural visits and activities in the cities of Barcelona and Gerona.

Stories should be sent to concurso@iemed.org by 30 June 2012 at midnight.

The Anna Lindh Foundation for Inter-Cultural Dialogue promotes knowledge, mutual respect and inter-cultural dialogue between the people of the Euro-Mediterranean region, working through a network of more than 3,000 civil society organisations in 43 countries. Its budget is co-funded by the EU (€7 million) and the EU member states (€6 million).
