Salto Youth Study on “Volunteering and Voluntary Service in Euro-Mediterranean Context”

The EU-funded Salto Youth programme has published a new study on ‘Volunteering and Voluntary Service in Euro-Mediterranean Context’, analysing issues and challenges that need further attention in order to develop volunteering, voluntary work and voluntary service in the field of Euro-Mediterranean youth work.

The publication, available in English, French and Arabic, says voluntary service in Euro-Mediterranean youth cooperation has had a lower participation than other actions in the Programme and its implementation has been hampered by various problems. “One of the biggest challenges is the social and cultural approach to volunteering in general and EVS in particular. The philosophy behind volunteering and voluntary service needs to be further promoted in the partner countries. This study can be considered as a first step to promoting such an aim,” says the study.

Another challenge, according to the study, is the lack of a proper database listing of all the available volunteering projects. The publication recommends the production of support material for youth organizations, like the SALTO-Youth practical guide on how to develop a volunteer project in the EuroMed region. “In addition, the preparation, training and evaluation process for volunteers is an important tool to improve the quality of voluntary service projects and ensure a healthy and sustainable learning process for volunteers,” says the study.

The EU also funds a regional programme EuroMed Youth IV during the period 2010-2013 with a budget of €5 million under the European Neighbourhood Policy. The programme aims at stimulating and encouraging mutual comprehension among youth in the Euro-Mediterranean region, fighting stereotypes and prejudices and enhancing the sense of solidarity among youth by promoting active citizenship. It also seeks to contribute to the development of youth policies in the Mediterranean Partner Countries. (ENPI Info Centre)
