EU NEIGHBOURS south and its opinion polling partner KANTAR PUBLIC conducted a face-to-face survey in seven Southern Mediterranean countries to assess general perceptions of the European Union and the values with which it is associated. A separate survey was conducted in Egypt by polling partner Baseera.

Overall, more than half of the people in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco and Palestine have a positive view of the European Union. 63% of people in the Maghreb region say that relations between their country and the EU are good, compared to 67% in the Mashrek countries, while both regions see EU financial support as being effective.

Citizens feel EU support has contributed most to tourism (31% Maghreb and 26% Mashrek) as well as trade (35% Maghreb) and economic development (26% Mashrek). In both regions, respondents want the EU to play an even greater role in promoting trade, human rights and economic development.

The opinion poll was conducted from July to September 2019 in Maghreb countries (Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia) and in June and July 2019 in Mashrek countries (Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine and Israel). A separate opinion poll was conducted in Egypt in July 2019.

A representative sample of around 1,000 people per country was interviewed except in Egypt where the sample included 2,017 people. The annual surveys are now into their fourth year, with the first wave carried out in Spring 2016.
